I Was Born to Die

Ok, so here’s the deal. I never really liked Doctor/River. I mean it’s not that I particularly didn’t like River, I mean her character was awesome, but I just hated the romance she had with the Doctor. The Romances is Doctor who are generally amazing, the show isn’t a love story, but in a way, it’s a story of love. It’s about the Doctor, and humanity, and friendship, and death, and hope and love. So when the Doctor is in love it’s always huge. The Doctor and Rose Tyler, for instance, I never got over them, even know. The chemistry was perfect, the relationship was beautiful, and it was so genuine, believable and simply breathtaking to watch. Not to mention heartbreaking to loose, the episodes where the Doctor looses Rose and honestly some of my favorite, because they are so beautiful, and sad, and heart wrenching they literally bring tears to my eyes. Their love story is one I’ll never forget. Then you have all the side love stories that sometimes last as little as one episode, but somehow manage to touch your heart. Even the non-love story relationships that feel like love are magnificent. I mean Amy and Rory, if that didn’t bring tears to your eyes then you have no heart, because it was one of the most breathtakingly beautiful, tragic love stories ever. But when it comes to River and the Doctor, honestly, Amy and the Doctor had more chemistry that that. Don’t get me wrong, Amy and Rory belong together, I know it, but I honestly find it FAR more believable if Amy and the Doctor developed a romance that the one he has with River… which is kind of weird because Amy is River’s mom. The you have all of those wonderful Doctor/Clara fans. Believe me, I am one as well. The onscreen chemistry, the dialogue, even the looks they exchange are so sweet and plausible, you just have to love them. I mean if we don’t get even a little cannon romance from those two, I will personally be aggravated. And then there is River, who just shows up and (kicks some ass, I know) wraps the Doctor around her finger. I feel like just because they’d met in the wrong order, they simply had to be in a relationship. Even the wedding seemed forced and unnatural. I was left with this bitter taste in my mouth that he married her just to save the universe, not because he genuinely loved her. I mean, I’m not saying he doesn’t care about her, he clearly does, but in my personal opinion (no offense intended to those who disagree) he simply did not truly love her. And as much as I love River, her relationship with the Doctor made it very uncomfortable for me to watch many of the episodes with her. In my heart, the true relationships in the show are between Clara and the Eleven, Amy and Rory, and Ten and Rose. That said, today’s episode was stunning. River’s character managed to capture my heart and break it, all in one episode, something it had failed to do throughout the various seasons she has been in. Her goodbye with the Doctor what stunning, and ever so gut wrenching. I wish I could have seen more of that in River’s previous appearances. However, I’m glad that if the Doctors infamous wife had to leave, she left with a glorious bang, and more than just a few tears shed from the fans, myself included. That said, I do hope that in the future Moffat will exploit the relationship between Clara and the Doctor, and if River’s character does pop back around, I shall be optimistically curious as to how things would turn out.
